NC Licensee Transitioning
This year, there are two steps you have to complete in order to renew your NC license(s).
Step 1 - Transition Step 2 - Renewal
STEP 1 - Transition
As of July 1st, 2008, North Carolina joined the NMLS or Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System. All licensees are required to transition their information into this new system. This is a database that, eventually, will become the national registry of all mortgage professionals, across the country. Though the system is in its early stages, it will become the platform for mortgage companies and professionals to maintain their licenses, monitor their information and complete their renewals.
NOTE: All new license applications must also be processed through the NMLS.
To date, very few people/companies have made the transition. This summer, the NCCOB sent out letters to all licensees, both companies and loan officers, detailing the procedure and giving directions as to how to complete the transition.
DEADLINE: September 30th
All licensees have until September 30th to transition their information to the NMLS without charge. As of October 1st there will be a fee to transition your information. The fees will be as follows:
$100 per Company
$20 per Branch
$30 per Loan Officer
To assure your proper transition and to avoid these fees, please complete the following procedures before September 30th:
| 1. Read the appropriate notification letter from the NCCOB |
| Loan Officer Transition Letter |
|
Company Transition Letter |
| |
| 2. Visit the NMLS website and complete the appropriate form |

Once you have completed the process for your Company, Branches and/or Loan Officer's license, you will receive an email from the NMLS stating that your record is being processed. It usually takes about 24 hours for you to receive confirmation that your information has been transitioned and that the process is complete.
NOTE: Licensees should not make changes (i.e. add branch, address changes, etc.) while requesting transition to the NMLS. We encourage you enter your information as you have it on file with the NCCOB currently. You can make changes through the NMLS AFTER you have successfully transitioned.
This is the end of step 1.
STEP 2 - Renewal
You will receive a notice from the COB in early November. You will have until December 31st to renew your license and pay the appropriate fee. You will now renew your license through the NMLS and pay your renewal online. The OCOB has effectively eliminated all paper applications and renewals.
If you do not complete your education and pay your renewal fee on time, your license will be suspended. You will not be allowed to renew unless you have transitioned your data. But, you will have the opportunity to reinstate your license.
There is a 60 day grace period where you may pay the $100 penalty (this is an increase in fee from last year) and renew.
- You have to pay the penalty plus the renewal fee and submit your renewal before March 1st.
- Failure to complete this process before March 1st will result in a termination of your license and if you wish to obtain a new license in NC, you will have to complete the entire process again (24 hours of initial education, the passing of and examination and approval by the NCCOB).
NOTE: The new guidelines now require a 600 Beacon score for approval of a loan originator's license.
If you have questions about transitioning or renewal, please contact the NMLS call center at (240) 386-4444 or the Office of the Commissioner of Banks at (919) 733-0589. You can also get more information by reading the NMLS Quick Guide page.
